last night we went to see MIA at the prince in st. kilda. i was so very excited that the day had finally arrived - we'd purchased tickets aaaages ago - that i made sure we got there by 8pm. so excited was i, that when we got to the door not long after and the guy said 'there'll be no passouts till ten thirty', i noded excitedly and went to elbow past him. he stopped me, looked me pointedly in the eye and said again, slower this time and a tad sternly - 'no passouts till ten-thirty'. i looked at him and said 'there's a bar up there, right? and toilets?' ( i even ignored the ticket chick when she went 'oh yeah, it's a real bar!'). they all nodded and i said 'well, let's go then!' got our tickets, went up the stairs, saw we were perhaps the fifth and sixth person there, and then it struck me - no passouts till ten-thirty. it was ten past eight. oh well, to the bar!
a couple of scotches and some smalltalk later, mark and i found some old-old mates from my monash uni days, so we joined them and chatted till it was time for MIA. didn't really get into the support act, was content sitting on the balcony and dissecting the average MIA-er's dress sense. stripes seem to be in. and visible lingerie. too bad i wasn't displaying any of these things. oh, well. i still liked her music, and i think that's all that matters, right?
anyhoo. we went in around 10.15, and she came on not long after. i just wanted to get a really good look at her, and spent every available opportunity staring at her. she's beautiful and powerful and oh-so-tiny. she is great live, and whipped the crowd into a real frenzy. she had all the people up the front come up on stage at one point to dance, then afterward when the song was over she said 'um... we need to reclaim the stage now, yo'. she had them kill the lights and asked us all to take out our mobiles and wave them around when she sang amazon 'because it made her feel like she was in the amazon'. maybe something to do with the fireflies there or something. here are some piccies i took with my phone.
