on sunday night, i broke a drought of sorts - i wore a sari for the first time since maybe around diwali, 1997. it was my cousin's engagement party and it was always going to be a dress-to-the-nines kind of affair, and sari-wearing opportunities are few and far between for me these days. i borrowed one off my mother, and she had to help wrap & pin me up for the evening. it was a soft silk sari with a lot of gold embroidery and sequins sewn on, and it draped just perfectly. i was a little afraid i would come undone at some point in the evening, but much to my own amazement i managed to stay decent all night. saris are excellent for somone with my body shape (ie short and curvy). they cling in all the right places and make you feel quite elegant, even when you're dancing like a madwoman in the midst of a bhangra-crush. all in all, it was an excellent evening. then on monday night at my brother's place, we watched 'the incredibles' on dvd - but in hindi! having nothing but bollywood subtitles to go by, i was expecting a shoddy translation job, but it was the best - they've dubbed it perfectly. the hindi title is 'hum hain lajawab' ('we are incredible'). each individual character's personality came out very clear and strong, which was a pleasant surprise. shah rukh khan and his real-life son aryan voice the father/son characters in the movie, and it works really, really well. so, my tip for the day? if you're hindi and you know it, rent, buy or steal a copy of 'the incredibles' on dvd, select hindi audio, and proceed to be amazed. finally here's a hindi movie that'll make you proud for a change!
